The Brooklyn Healthy Food Campaign (BHFC)
is a partnership of City and State governments, citywide service providers, grassroots organizations, and concerned citizens committed to improving community health and food security in the Borough of Brooklyn.
Our goal
is to work together to apply our collective technical expertise, agency resources, and grassroots community organizing in creating community appropriate solutions to address problems in food distribution, production and access.
Our 6 priorities
- School Food: Increasing the amount of fresh, local food in our school cafeterias
- Distribution: Retrofitting our current food distribution system to lower environmental impacts and support the development of a stable local/regional economy
- Education and Outreach: Increase the public’s awareness about local food, agriculture, and ways to access it, increase nutrition program enrollment and use at healthy, local food vendors such as farmers markets and healthy bodegas.
- Supermarkets: Increase number of supermarkets that have a high inventory of locally grown/produced food throughout the borough.
- Healthy Bodegas: Increase the number of bodegas providing healthy food options to their customers.
- Green Jobs: Build a strong local economy through the development of local food system jobs
